Media and motion

Captions, autoplaying sound, blinking, scrolling and auto-refresh. 5 automated checks Websight runs, plus 1 axe rule it does not run, each with a live example and a fix you can copy.

Audio needs captions or a transcriptaudio-captionAn audio element plays sound and nothing else, so anyone who cannot hear gets nothing. WCAG asks for a text alternative for recorded audio: a transcript on the page or linked from it, or a captions track. The axe check looks for a track element with kind="captions". It is marked deprecated in axe-core and off by default, because browsers do not show captions on an audio element; a transcript is the fix that helps.not runAVideos must have captionsvideo-captionA video element with speech or meaningful sound needs captions: text that appears on screen in time with the audio. Add a track element with kind="captions" pointing at a WebVTT file. Captions are not only for deaf viewers; most people on a train watch with the sound off.ASound must not start playing on its ownno-autoplay-audioIf a page starts playing sound by itself and keeps going for more than three seconds, it needs a way to stop or mute it before anything else on the page. The axe check flags audio and video elements that have autoplay, no controls, and are not muted or very short. Remove autoplay, or add controls so the person can stop it.ADo not use the blink elementblinkThe blink element makes text flash on and off and gives nobody a way to stop it. Browsers dropped support years ago, but the tag still turns up in old content and still fails the check. Replace it with ordinary text; if something needs emphasis, make it bold or give it a highlight.ADo not use the marquee elementmarqueeThe marquee element scrolls text across the page and never stops. There is no way to pause it, people who read slowly cannot finish a line before it leaves, and screen magnifiers only ever show a slice of it. Replace it with static text. If you have several items to show, a list, or a carousel with a pause button, does the job.APages must not refresh or redirect on a timermeta-refreshA meta refresh with a delay reloads the page, or sends the visitor somewhere else, after a set number of seconds. Nobody is asked and nobody can stop it. A screen reader starts reading from the top again; a half-filled form is lost. The check flags any delay from 1 second up to 20 hours. An instant redirect (delay 0) is allowed, and an update the visitor controls is better still.A
